Colonial streets, a bay full of islands, waterfalls in the forest, and cachaça older than most countries. Here's the shortlist worth building your days around.
Paraty packs a lot into a small place. You could see the essentials in three days and still leave with a list for next time. Here's what earns its place, and where to read more on each.
Start where the town started. The historic center — cobblestones, whitewashed walls, blue-trimmed shutters, four colonial churches — is a car-free open-air museum and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wander without a plan, then read the history and landmarks guides to know what you're looking at. Come back after dark, when the lamplight and the flooded-street tides turn it magic.

The islands are the reason Paraty is famous. Take a schooner or speedboat tour to swim and snorkel between coves, or paddle the mirror-calm Saco do Mamanguá fjord. A day on the water is non-negotiable.
Inland, the forest hides waterfalls — including the Tobogã natural slide — and historic cachaça distilleries you can tour and taste. The two pair perfectly: a morning swim under a fall, an afternoon flight of umburana-aged pinga. Many visitors do both on a single Jeep or Gold Trail tour.
Drive to Trindade for the natural pool, hike into Praia do Sono, or just take a taxi to Praia Grande for kiosk fish and a swim. See the full beaches guide. And leave room to do nothing: a hammock, the pool, the sunset over the bay from the deck at Cantinho do Marinheiro. Paraty rewards the unscheduled hour as much as the booked one.
