Paraty boat tours

The bay's 65 islands and dozens of beaches are the reason most people come to Paraty. Here's how the boat trips work, so you pick the right one.

Schooner, speedboat, or private?

There are three ways to get out on Paraty's bay: the big shared schooners, a private speedboat for your group, or a chartered schooner. Each suits a different day — and a different budget.

The shared schooner (saveiro)

The classic Paraty outing is a shared schooner — a broad wooden saveiro that departs the main pier around late morning and returns before sunset. It stops at three or four beaches and snorkel points (names like Praia da Lula, Ilha Comprida, and Lagoa Azul recur), serves a grilled-fish lunch on board, and keeps the bar open. It's sociable, inexpensive, and the easiest way to see a lot of the bay. Fares start low (from around R$120 per person); food and drinks are extra. See our schooner experience page for the details.

The private speedboat (lancha)

For flexibility, a private speedboat lets your group set its own route and pace — more islands in less time, stops where you want, and the option to reach quieter coves the big boats skip. It costs more (priced per boat, not per head), but split among a family or a few couples it's very reasonable, and for a special day it's worth it.

The private schooner charter

Want the schooner experience without the crowd? You can charter a whole saveiro for your group — the same easy pace and grilled-fish lunch, just yours. Popular for celebrations, small groups, and anyone who'd rather not share the deck.

How to choose — and when to go

Go on a calm, clear day — wind flattens the fun and cuts visibility for snorkelling. Mornings are usually calmer. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, and cash for the bar. Bianca books all three kinds and will tell you honestly which fits your group and the forecast.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a boat tour in Paraty?
Shared schooner tours start around R$120 per person (lunch and drinks extra). Private speedboats and schooner charters are priced per boat and cost more, but split across a group they're good value.
What's the difference between a schooner and a speedboat?
A schooner (saveiro) is a large, slow wooden boat on a fixed shared route — sociable and cheap. A speedboat (lancha) is private, faster, and flexible, letting your group choose the stops.
What do boat tours stop at?
Typically three to four island beaches and snorkel points around the bay, such as Praia da Lula, Ilha Comprida, and Lagoa Azul, with time to swim at each.
When is the best time to take a boat tour?
On a calm, clear day, ideally in the morning when the water is flattest and snorkelling visibility is best. Your host can read the forecast for you.
Can the host book the boat for us?
Yes — Bianca arranges shared schooners, private speedboats, and full charters, and will match the trip to your group and the weather.
